L-theanine and Longevity

L-theanine and Longevity

Found in tea - especially green tea - L-theanine is an amino acid with proven benefits to the human body. Since 1994, L-theanine has been approved by the Japanese government as a dietary supplement that can help reduce stress and relieve anxiety. It's designated as a Generally Recognized As Safe( GRAS) ingredient by the FDA and can be safely used in food and beverages. L-theanine has been proven to improve cognition, relieve emotional problems, promote vascular health, and more. These benefits promote health and longevity, and help to delay aging.

Overview

  • L-theanine helps to reduce inflammation and inhibit oxidation.
  • L-theanine helps to reduce the formation of cross-links and AGEs.
  • L-theanine increases levels of key neurotransmitters in the brain.
  • L-theanine protects brain cells from cellular stress.
  • L-theanine increases the production of anti-aging substances such as FOXO1.
  • L-theanine has many other benefits.

L-theanine and Anti-Aging

L-theanine is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant: it helps to reduce damage to tissues and cells due to inflammation and oxidation, thereby improving the function of these cells and delaying aging.

L-theanine reduces cross-linking - the chemical bonding between molecules that can lead to decreased function of tissues and organs - and AGEs formation. Cross-linking is usually caused by non-enzymatic glycation reactions that generate advanced glycation end products (AGEs) that damage your tissues and cells. These harmful AGEs also increase oxidative stress and inflammation, thereby accelerating the aging process which includes not only the appearance of skin wrinkles but also an increase in the risk of cancer, diabetes, myocardial infarction, cerebral infarction, and other serious diseases. Moreover, AGEs can also combine with various human tissue cells and destroy them. Therefore, reducing cross-linking and the formation of AGEs plays a key role in anti-aging and the prevention of many chronic diseases.

When transported to the brain through the blood-brain barrier, L-theanine helps increase the level of key neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). It also promotes relaxation and improves cognition, focus, and clarity by blocking the excitatory neurotransmitter, glutamate. In a word, it makes the brain younger. L-theanine also protects brain cells from cellular stress to improve vascular health, lowers cortisol levels to lessen anxiety and stress, and helps reduce the potential harmful effects of these emotions.

Moreover, L-theanine also promotes the production of anti-aging substances such as FOXO1. FOXO1 is a protein that slows down the process of cellular aging to help extend our lifespan.

L-theanine and General Health

In addition to directly fighting aging, L-theanine offers many health benefits that promote longevity. L-theanine can help boost immunity

  • L-theanine helps boost immunity
  • L-theanine helps relieve stress and anxiety
  • L-theanine improves cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health
  • L-theanine improves cognitive performance
  • L-theanine improves concentration and focus
  • L-theanine improves sleep quality
  • ...
